Through the earliest antiquities of time, nature has prevailed as one of man’s greatest influences. Historically, it has been worshipped in cultures, honoured in religions and treasured for man’s survival. At the end of the 18th century, Europe blossomed from it’s Rationalism and Classicist ideals and gave birth to my favourite of all movements, Romanticism. Artists, poets and musicians such as Turner, Constable, Lord Byron, Keats, Verdi and Wagner all became ardent lovers and creators of passion fuelled works championed by their intuitive connection to the natural world.
Perhaps Lord Byron described this relationship best in his poem from Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.
“By the deep sea, and music in it’s roar: I love not man the less, but nature more.”
It is in this exhibition ‘The White of the Cloud’ that I explore my emotional relationship with nature and play homage to the heroine of my inspiration ‘the cloud’. I celebrate her atmospheric awe and survey her wispy rhythms and climatic changes. The ‘white’ of the cloud refers to the brilliant intense light of the cloud and acknowledges its hypnotic, primeval allure, perhaps an enlightenment of sorts or just a humble sense of belonging. Either way, the feeling I experience from nature’s ambience is one of euphoria, harmony and solace. These emotions run deep and continue to fuel my passion to paint.
My landscapes endeavour to capture the sublime fusion between the land and sky in an organic, instinctual manner. Drawing on my visual and physical experiences allows me to paint with vigour, and offers a sense of energy and place in my work. My ideas are born from my surroundings on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, but they are developed from within, like the Romantics before me. My quest is intuitive, a yearning from the heart that manifests itself into a much needed expression.
My intention for the viewer is to take a moment and breathe in the illusory void within the painting and perhaps even become part of its sensory place. This interaction with the painting is of a personal nature. In essence, my aim is to heighten one’s love and emotion for the natural world and maybe even ignite the eternal relationship that lays deep within our ancestral blood.
