Kirsten Coelho

Birth Place: Copenhagen, Denmark
Year of Birth: 1966

Themes:
The use of enamelware in Australia’s colonial history provide a reference point for this work. In the circuitous history of objects, enamelwares were made and purchased often to replace fine china in working class households, with some pieces having the form and surface decorations resembling the patterns of English and Chinese bone china tea sets. To reconstruct some of these objects in clay is to create a cycle whereby the ceramic object now attempts to emulate the metal object. These vessels endeavour to convey some of the surface history of the enamelwares by highlighting the potential surface abstractions that arise from the deterioration of these objects. They attempt to create a juncture between an austerity of form and the unlikely abstractions found in the small chips and exposed iron oxide.
